Hi Liz, and everyone, what a great info request!
The diamond shape looks neat and I'm all for it but the boxes I happen to know and love (and sell) are TJ Phillips' of Garden Goodies at Gardengoodies.com. They are 7/8" by 2". These were successful this year at our house where Violet Green Swallows fledged four, and this is a place where the Sparrows are very house-hungry. I wouldn't go to 2 1/2 and I wouldn't go even a micron over 7/8 as Sparrows are very good contortionists. One guy at Hoquiam who seemed to know what he was talking about even thought 2" was too wide, and I no longer assume that what stops Sparrows one year will continue to stop them indefinitely--(They hold seminars on this over the winter).
