This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Oct 5 (2001). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

A DUNLIN and 9 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen 29 Sep at Coeur d'Alene
Lake, Kootenai Co ID according to Stephen Lindsay slindsay at dmi.net . The
birds were seen from along Harlow Point Road, just north of Harrison off ID
97. Harlow Point Road is the first road that heads left after crossing the
Coeur d'Alene River north of Harrison. ID DeLorme 60 BC-1.5

A PEREGRINE FALCON, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, and 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS
were the best birds at Mann Lake, east of Lewiston, Nez Perce Co ID on 29
Sep according to Joe Lipar jlipar at wsu.edu . From the north end of Lewiston,
follow US 12 south into town, cross the Clearwater River on Memorial Bridge
and immediately take the first left (east) toward East Lewiston. Turn left
(east) onto East Main Street and go about a half mile to the flashing yellow
lights. Turn right (south) onto Lapwai (a.k.a. Lindsay Creek) Road. When the
road forks stay right on Lindsay Creek Road (Nez Perce County Road 460) and
follow it about 5 miles to its terminus at Grelle Avenue. Turn left (east)
onto Grelle Avenue and just past the sharp right curve, turn left (east)
onto East Powers Avenue (a.k.a. Lapwai Road). Continue straight (east) past
the grain towers to the main parking lot. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

A GREAT EGRET was at the northern-most tip of Hayden Lake in Kootenai Co, ID
on 2 Oct according to Stephen Lindsay slindsay at dmi.net . This bird has
apparently been around for about a week. To get there, head north from Coeur
d'Alene on US 95, turn right (east) on Lancaster. From here it is 6.7 miles
to McLeans Bay where the egret has been feeding on the extensive shallow
bay. Along the way Lancaster becomes Hayden Lake Rd. The best viewing spot
of the bay is from a short gravel drive beside a red barn with a white roof.
This is where Hayden and Lancaster creeks empty into the bay (when there is
water). If you pass the sign indicating it is 5 miles to Mokins Bay
Campground you have gone just too far. You may have to glass the area
carefully - a scope is helpful as it is a very large bay. ID DeLorme 60,
AB-2.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and a MAGNOLIA WARBLER were at Wenatchee Confluence
State Park at Wenatchee, Chelan Co, WA on 2 Oct according to Dave Beaudette
drtbrdr at earthlink.net . The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was in the roses above
the river bank just north of the campground. The MAGNOLIA WARBLER was in the
cottonwood forest at the Horan Natural Area, which is at the south end of
the state park. To get to the warbler: From US 2 at Wenatchee, eastbound or
westbound, follow signs to the state park. Park in the first parking lot
which will be on the right. Walk the asphalt trail south, go over the bridge
crossing the Wenatchee River. The entrance to the Horan Natural Area is just
across the bridge. Enter the natural area and go straight ahead on the trail
to the restroom where there is a trail junction. Go left and very soon you
will enter a cottonwood forest. The Magnolia Warbler was seen about 200 feet
inside the forest.
