Today while watching the RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and STARLINGS mass up in
trees before they go into the reeds below to roost, an awesome thing
happend. I was watching a small, small flock of REDWINGS come in for a
landing on a tree when all of a suden they and the resting BLACKBIRDS all of
a sudden flew off in tight formation (the rush down in twist turning fasion
then shoot up and circle type of anti-predator flight). I wasn't paying too
close attention which is very cretical when looking for any type of
ACCIPITER, but none the less, I just in time saw an IMM. FEMALE COOPER'S
HAWK chase a REDWING but she over shot it and continued on which is typical
of ACCIPITERS (which is what annoys me about watching them, they aren't
persisitent unless they have come into contact with their prey). Oh well, I
have been waiting for an ACCIPITER attack or MERLIN attack on these birds
because it's blaintly obvious that there is a food source, which you would
think would attrack the hawks. Maybe next time....
