Thursday, 10/18, 6:04am This is Keith Taylor in Victoria, BC. A RED
THROATED PIPIT was located in a flock of AMERICAN PIPITS in the central
Saanich bulb fields on Vancouver Island. This is the fifth record at this
site. It was discovered late afternoon, October 17. This species' stay is
usually only one to three days. I will keep you updated. From the Swartz
Bay Ferry Terminal, 25 miles north of Victoria, drive south on the main
highway, hwy 17, towards Victoria, for 10km, 6 miles. Turn right onto Mt.
Newton Crossroad at the traffic lights and the very tall McDonald's sign.
After less than a kilometer, turn right onto Central Saanich Road, and
proceed to the large greenhouse complex, about 1.5 kilometers (about a mile
and a bit). Park on the shoulder of the road just past the greenhouses, and
walk past weeds with the yellow flowers (probably mustard) on the left
between the road and the reservoir. This will be the second day when you
receive this message so it would be unlikely that the bird would be there
for more than today and tomorrow.
