I received an e-mail message from Stuart Johnston alerting me to
the presence of a first year WHITE-FACED IBIS at Bingen Pond in Klickitat
County. He first found this bird which is an addition to the County
Checklist on Oct. 2 and saw it for the next two days, it was not seen
again until Oct. 11th.
I went up there to search for it on Oct. 22 and found it feeding
in the center of the pond. On the way to Bingen I checked Rock Creek Cove
at Stevenson, Skamania County and saw two female SURF SCOTERS there and a
stop a few miles east at the mouth of the Wind River produced a single
RED-NECKED GREBE.
Bingen Pond is reached by going South from Highway 14 on Maple
Street in the town of Bingen, cross the railroad tracks and continue out
on the gravel road towards the Columbia River. The pond is easily visible
from the road although the best viewing area is from the old road along
the South side of the pond, park at the Southwest corner of the pond and
walk out.
