Obolites, and Tweeters,
I did check the bird to see if it might be a GLOSSY IBIS rather
than a WHITE-FACED IBIS. Although the bird has dark eyes (as far as I
could tell in the rain) it lacks the bluish lines at the edge of facial
skin I would expect on a juvenile Glossy Ibis. I know that juvenile
White-faced Ibis don't get the reddish eye color until at least December
and the bluish skin on a Glossy also comes in later. Although this is not
mentioned in all of the books that I checked after returning home, it is
in Sibley (but not in the "Handbook of North American Birds" by Ralph S.
Palmer). I also thought of Glossy Ibis when the news of its being there
first reached me. I would certainly welcome other peoples opinion and
observation of this bird. I did have a ibis on the Tillamook C.B.C. in
the late 70's that was not assigned to any species after review. After
checking Ken Kaufmann's "Advanced Birding" which states that juvenile
birds may be impossible to separate in the field, I may have to leave
this bird to the plegadis ibis category too.
