There is a job opening for an Ornithologist at the Charles Darwin Research
Station in the Galapagos Islands - Ecuador Ornithology Investigator. The
ornithology investigator will work for the ornithology program, which
focuses on the conservation of the Galapagos avifauna. The investigator will
be responsible for the design, coordination, and execution of various
research and monitoring projects to be implemented by the CDRS ornithology
program, as well as developing plans for medium-term and long-term
monitoring of various species of marine and terrestrial birds. S/he will
also supervise and direct the work of a diverse group of volunteers,
scholarship students, and associate investigators, and prepare technical and
scientific publications based on his/her work, and reports for various
audiences. Candidates should have a Masters or Bachelors Degree in Science
or a field related to conservation biology, with 5 years of research
experience. The position requires experience managing and designing
databases, experience designing and operating ornithology projects,
validated by scientific publications, and an advanced knowledge of
statistics and experimental design. The investigator will have proven
ability to communicate effectively (written and spoken) both in English and
Spanish.

Ornithology Investigator
The ornithology investigator will join the "Vertebrate Ecology and
Monitoring" team at the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), based on
Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos. The ornithology program focuses on the
conservation of avifauna, the most dominant group of terrestrial
vertebrates in Galapagos, 50% of species are endemic to the archipelago. In
recent decades, the populations of some species have diminished mainly due
to anthropogenic factors. The animals introduced by humans, through
predation, competition, or transported diseases, are affecting the survival
of birds. In the marine environment there are risks associated with fishing.
The investigator will be responsible for the design, coordination, and
execution of various research and monitoring projects to be implemented by
the CDRS ornithology program, as well as developing plans for medium-term
and long-term monitoring of various species of marine and terrestrial birds.

Responsibilities:
**To design and operate research and monitoring programs of Galapagos birds.
**To supervise and direct the work of a diverse group of volunteers,
scholarship students, and associate investigators.
**To coordinate the development of research projects with other programs of
the Department of Vertebrate Ecology and Monitoring and other areas of
investigation in the CDRS.
**To prepare technical and scientific publications based on his/her work,
and reports for various audiences.
**To collaborate with CDRS and Galapagos National Park Service colleagues in
the diffusion and application of study results, technical training of
personnel and students, and giving advice to the institutions of the
province.
**To collaborate in fundraising, cooperating with the tourism sector,
donors, and the media, and preparing proposals and reports.
**To participate in associated activities with other programs related to the
conservation of the islands and with the operation of the Department of
Vertebrate Ecology and Monitoring and the CDRS in general.

Qualifications:
**Masters or Bachelors Degree in Science or a field related to conservation
biology, with 5 years of research experience.
**Ability to communicate effectively (written and spoken) both in English
and Spanish.
**Experience designing and operating ornithology projects, validated by
scientific publications.
**Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting ornithological data,
preferably related to population state and changes in wild birds.
**Experience in the management and design of databases.
**Advanced knowledge of statistics and experimental design.
**Ability to work effectively developing numerous activities.
**Ability to apply scientific results to the management of natural areas.
**Aptitude for fieldwork in isolated sites and for prolonged periods.
**Aptitude to form part of a multicultural team.
**Strong interest and commitment to conservation.

Candidates are preferred who have:
**Experience coordinating and participating in the development of
multi-institutional programs.
**Experience of Geographical Information Systems and proficiency in using
the related programs (ArcView, ArcInfo).
**Experience in avian disease research.
