Today my wife and I spent a pleasant day looping
around SW Washington to do a little birding. Our
objective was the Julia Hansen NWR near Cathlamet
(DeLorme 31 C-5). A pleasant surprize along the way
was an unplanned detour onto Puget Island, just
upriver from the Refuge. The roads are elevated over
the farmland on most of this island, and there was
vitrually no traffic. This allowed us to stop
whenever we needed to without searching for the next
wide shoulder to park in. The recent death of
someone's Black Angus drew in between 15 and 20 TURKEY
VULTURES to one spot on the island. Most of them were
adults, but a few juveniles. Another half dozen TVs
were seen elsewhere on the island and farther
downstream as well. (Did you get that, Diane?) Also
seen on the island were:
1 immature BALD EAGLE
1 light RED TAIL
1 dark RED TAIL
1 OSPREY
6 WEST. SCRUB JAYS in apple trees and on phonelines
Lots & Lots of BARN SWALLOWS
15-20 V.G. SWALLOWS
3 R.W. BLACKBIRDS
8 GOLDFINCH.

At the Julia Hansen NWR, we were delighted to find the
road paved all the way around the loop except for a
small portion which was easily traversed. And again,
almost no people. Birds sighted there were:
6 GOLDLINCH
15 CEDAR WAXWING
35 AM. CROW
1 RED TAILED HAWK
1 D.C. CORMORANT
mucho BARN SWALLOWS
3 KINGFISHER
1 G.B. HERON
1 female NORTH. HARRIER
4 WEST. SANDPIPERS
2 OSPREY
3 STELLER'S JAY

The Drive was 320 miles roundtrip from our place near
Port Orchard, and was a delightful day.
