Today, Sept. 3, I birded Johnson Ridge in southeast Snohomish County. It
was raining or foggy or both all morning. I noted that the cone crop still
looked too green for White-winged Crossbills and the Mountain Ash berries
need another 4 weeks or so before the birds start eating them.

Down near the bottom starting up just past the lower section of the burn was
a small flock of Gray Jays, 5-Red Crossbills, Juncos and a MacGillivray's
Warbler. Next I stopped where the road bisects the burn and heard a Blue
Grouse which seemed late for vocalizing.

At the top was a lone American Pipit looking lost and 1 Yellow-rumped
Warbler along with Golden-crowned Kinglets and Chestnut-backed Chickadees.
Another month should produce better quality birds. Usually best right
before the snow flies for Pine Grosbeaks and White-winged Crossbills and
possibly Bohemian Waxwings.
