Columbia Estuary Report - 9/5/2001

There were 250,000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS off the South Jetty of
the Columbia River this afternoon. Many were working the surf
right off observation deck. A POMARINE JAEGER was picking on
HEERMANN'S GULLS here as well.

Fred Ramsey saw a PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER on the shorebird flats
just before high tide.

My shorebird count from 1530-1645hr:
Wandering Tattler 1
Western Sandpiper 45
Pectoral Sandpiper 1
Red-necked Phalarope 6

Todd Thornton checked Coffenbury Lake this afternoon and found
2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Apparently, the change in the wind has
given the recently seen birds an opportunity to move on.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
