There were still about 75,000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS very near
shore this morning at the South Jetty of the Columbia River.
Try as we might to prove otherwise, they were all Sooties.

We noticed, that several had white trailing edges
on the secondaries. These birds, when sitting on the water,
showed white wing patches remeniscent of White-winged Scoters.
There were also quite a few with molting or worn wing coverts.

None with white heads, however.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
