Carol Schulz and I led a field trip to Ocean Shores today (9/15).
Temperature was around 60 degrees, cloudy/foggy and misty at times but not
bad. Our first stop was at Friend's Landing near Montesano, where highlights
included:
1 Pileated Woodpecker
1 Green Heron
4 Band-tailed Pigeons
1 Fox Sparrow
1 Orange-crowned Warbler
1 Townsend's Warbler

Our next birding stop was Ocean City State Park. No passerine activity in
the woods so we headed to the beach access. The wet areas near the parking
area (as you're walking towards the beach) had 1 adult and 2 juvenile
Pectoral Sandpipers. Otherwise not much on the beach. The bridge at Cyber
Lake beared no birds.

Next stop was the Pt. Brown Jetty. Very little of note save a flock of
about 1 dozen Surfbirds. We stopped at the Ocean Shores Sewer Ponds and had a
massive flock of cormorants at the nearby bay, but nothing notable. We then
headed over to Damon Point and the former "pond" (which seems to now be much
less valuable to birds as it is completely washed out and saltwater). The few
highlights here were:
5 Baird's Sandpipers
1 Horned Lark
11 Marbled Godwits (somewhat unusual for this location, at the base of the
point near the marina)

From there we walked to the Ocean Shores Game Range west of Damon Point.
Some highlights seen at the Game Range were:
8 Red-throated Loons
2 Common Loons
2 Red-necked Grebes
5 Horned Grebes
1 Marbled Godwit
5 Sanderlings
20 Western Sandpipers
10 Least Sandpipers (Western and Least were seen in flight only)
1 pure flock of 8 Baird's Sandpipers (I've never had a real flock of Baird's
on the coast)
3 Snowy Plovers
1 Semipalmated Plover
2 Black-bellied Plovers
1 Dunlin

On the way back home we stopped at the Hoquiam Sewage Treatment Plant,
Where we found the following:
1 female Bufflehead
1 female Common Goldeneye
1 Green-winged Teal
3 Northern Shovelers
4 Northern Pintails
3 Lesser Scaup
1 Greater Scaup
5 Mew Gulls
2 Heerman's Gulls (I've never seen them actually in the sewer ponds, on
freshwater [if you can really call it that]).

That's about all we saw; good birding!
