Columbia Estuary Report - 9/18/2001

There were 4 PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVERS at the South Jetty of
the Columbia shorebird flats. A SHORT-EARED OWL was flushed
from the driftwood behind the back ponds.

There were 31 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS in the field up Hwy 202
near Crosel Creek (about 2 miles E of the old Youngs Bay
Bridge).

AMERICAN COOTS and WESTERN GREBES have returned in numbers
to Youngs Bay and can be seen from the Youngs Bay Causeway.
There were 7 PIED BILLED GREBES (and 2 NUTRIA) in the Wireless
Rd slough. VIRGINIA RAILS are moving through the area as
well. They are most easily encountered at the Astoria
Mitigation Bank on an incoming tide.
