Richard Repp from Yakima found a juvenile Sabine's Gull at Sarg Hubbard Park
in Yakima at 12:10 pm today. Sarg Hubbard is east of I-82 at the Yakima
Ave-Terrace Heights Blvd. exit. Go east from I-82 on Terrace Heights Blvd.
and turn right just after the first stoplight, which is near two car
dealorships and Wallmart. If you go over the Yakima River, you missed the
turn. The road goes south from Terrace Heights Blvd. and in a short
distance the park is visible on the east side of the road.

The gull was on the first pond on the south side of the park. The pond has
a concrete stage on it. Richard and the gull were still there at 12:40 when
I got there and 1:00 when Andy Stepniewski got there. We all left at 1:20
with the gull out of view against the east bank of the pond.

It split its time while we were watching it between flying low over the pond
and sitting on the water searching amongst the vegetation on the east side
of the pond. It was really hugging the shore, so if you go to see it, check
the shore well and be patient.

This is by far the best way to see this small gull. There has been just one
previous sighting in Yakima County, at Priest Rapids. It is amazing to
standing on the hill overlooking the pond, looking at the Sabine's Gull with
a spotting scope. I have only seen them before on pelagic trips, holding on
to the railing of the boat with one hand and the binos with the other.

If the gull is not found on the ponds at the south side of the park, walk
south on the pathway on the east side of the ponds to Buchanan Lake, where
it may have moved to.
