This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Sep 21 (2001). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

Up to 4 juvenile SABINE'S GULLS were persisting at the La Grande, Union Co
OR, Water Treatment Ponds according to Trent Bray, John and Sue Rogers
johrog at bmi.net and Sherry Hagen . The ponds are near I-84 exit 265. OR
DeLorme 86, C-4.

Another juvenile SABINE'S GULL was at Sarg Hubbard Park in Yakima, Yakima
Co, WA on 20 Sep according to Richard Repp and Denny Granstrand.. Sarg
Hubbard Park is east of I-82 at the Yakima Ave-Terrace Heights Blvd. exit.
Go east from I-82 on Terrace Heights Blvd. and turn right just after the
first stoplight, which is near 2 car dealorships and WalMart. If you go over
the Yakima River, you missed the turn. The road goes south from Terrace
Heights Blvd. and in a short distance the park is visible on the east side
of the road. The bird split its time between flying low over the pond and
sitting on the water searching amongst the vegetation on the east side of
the pond. It was really hugging the shore, so if you go to see it, check the
shore well and be patient.

Several SABINE'S GULLS are still on Sprague Lake, Lincoln and Adams
counties, WA, along I-90 at the Sprague Lake Resort. Warren Hall and Jim
Acton report birds this past week at the southwest tip of Harper Island on
the southern end of the lake. They were best seen from the Danekas Sportsman
's Access, the last access along the old US 10 Hwy. Bring your scope, the
birds are sometimes a long was a way. WA DeLorme 71, BC-8.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was northwest of Othello, Adams Co, WA on 20 Sep
according to Bob Flores. The bird was at the McCain's potato ponds that are
behind McManamon Road and Para Pond. From Othello go north on Broadway (west
end of town extending north from WA 24) past the processing and storage
facilities, SVZ and cubing plant. When the road crosses the RR tracks it
becomes McManamon Road. Continue across the canal and down the hill past the
two potato sheds. The Para Ponds are just beyond on both sides of the road.
WA DeLorme 53, B-7.

A single ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD was visiting the feeder of Nancy Miller
nmiller at moscow.com in Viola, Latah Co, ID midweek. Nancy lives 11 miles
north of Moscow along Four Mile Road.

A single SANDERLING was north of Harrison, Benewah Co, ID on 16 Sep
according to Stephen Lindsay slindsay at dmi.net . The bird was on one of the
small islands off of the first part of Harlow Point Road, the first road
heading west after you cross the Coeur d'Alene River heading north on ID 97.
In the same general area, across ID 97 at the Wildlife Viewing Area along
Thompson Lake Rd, Stephen saw a flock of 8-10 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS in the
brush at the parking area. Thompson Lake Road is between the river and
Harlow Point Road. ID DeLorme 60, BC-1.

A BAND-TAILED PIGEON flew across the road in front of Stephen Lindsay
slindsay at dmi.net . at Hayden Lake, Kootenai Co, ID on 20 Sep. The bird was
on Lower Hayden Lake Road, along the south edge of the lake, about a mile
east of Tobler Marina. ID DeLorme 60, AB-1.5.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was lurking today near Spokane. Warren Hall reports
the bird is at the upper end of Indian Canyon Park in the brushy spring near
the intersection of Bonnie Drive and Rimrock Drive. These roads are best
seen on a Spokane city map. Bonnie Drive is a dirt road, just past the
entrance to the Indian Canyon golf course. Warren has been tossing bird food
here. If there are a lot of quail, take a stroll and spook them off so the
more timid White-crowneds and the White-throated will move back in.

If you have any questions about birds on the report, call me before 9 pm at
208.883.0943. If you see any of the birds mentioned in this report, be sure
to let me know.

Good birding.
