Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Monday, April 1 (2002). This hotline,

A 3rd winter SLATY-BACKED GULL has been present since mid-March at
Sandpoint, Bonner Co., ID. Most frequently seen at the Sandpoint City Beach
just east of Main Street in town (watch for signs heading north on US 95
through town). It has also been seen from Memorial Park at the end of Boyer
St. on the west side of town. The bird may best be found in the morning from
7:00 - 8:00 AM. The last report was on Saturday, 30 March in the morning.

Nearby along Sunnyside Rd., northeast of Sandpoint on the north shore of
Lake Pond Orielle, hundreds of waterfowl are massing and EURASIAN WIGEON may
be found. Also on the Pack River delta, a first winter GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULL and an adult MEW GULL have been present. Sunnyside Rd. is off ID-200
several miles east of Sandpoint, look for the Sportsman's Access sign. See
ID Delorme p. 62 B-3.

The WESTERN SCRUB-JAY persists near Chief Timothy Park, Asotin Co., WA. It
may be of one of the interior sub-species and additional photos and
descriptions would be useful (please email the compiler
charless at moscow.com). To reach the spot, a good landmark is the small
subdivision off Silcott Hills Road on the
south side of US 12. Park at the green gate closest to Silcott Hills Road
and walk just a bit west. The Scrub-Jay was in and around the bramble there.
The bird has been observed in other areas nearby, and has proven to be
secretive at times, so be diligent and patient in your search. WA DeLorme

Two HOARY REDPOLLS were still visiting the feeders of Terry and Christine
Gray in Genesee, Latah Co, ID as of Sunday, 31 March. The Gray's live at 550
North
Fir. See ID Delorme p.58 C-1.

About 30 WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS were along the Snake R., Asotin Co, WA, just
west of Evans Rd. which is west of Clarkston, WA on March 31. They were
circling around the cliffs at dusk. See WA DeLorme p. 43 A-8.

A dark BROAD-WINGED HAWK migrating with a group of RED-TAILED HAWKS was
reported from near Cheney, WA on April 1 by Matthew Moskwik
(mpmoskwik at hotmail.com)

Lots of SANDHILL CRANES continue to be seen near Othello, Adams Co., WA as
reported by Randy Hill. He recommends best between 7 and 9 am or after 4 pm
until near sunset especially along Corfu Road (Road B SE) about 12 miles
west of Othello, between 5:30 and 6:30 pm. See WA DeLorme p.53 B-6 & 7.

Spring arrivals continue to be reported throughout the region including
OSPREY,
TURKEY VULTURE, TREE SWALLOW, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW, TREE SWALLO,
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, SPOTTED TOWHEE, WESTERN BLUEBIRD, MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD
and others.
