Hi Birders:
The rain finally let up, and at 7pm I took the dog out for a walk. I heard
two Barred Owls across the street in some mixed woods. One called "Who
Cooks For You", and then from a couple of hundred feet away, another one
answered in a slightly different voice. Each owl only called once. I live
in DesMoines on 15th Ave
South. East of the houses across the street is the "buy-out area" that is
now woods. It used to be residential and was bought out about 10 years ago
by the Port of Seattle for the airport flight path. The woods eventually
connects w/ another woods which is part of DesMoines Creek Park. All the
trees are getting older, and there are quite a few big maple trees and a few
cottonwoods. Lots of alder trees and some conifers. I walked up to
another road above the woods, and looked for the owls but could not see
them.
These are the first Barred Owls I've heard here. I have heard W Screech
Owls here in the past. It was quite light when I heard them at 7pm, and
remained light until about 8pm.
