Carol,
Barred Owls are on eggs right now, but may be hatching at any time. The female's call is about 1/3 octave higher in frequency than the male's. She will call from the nest, which is usually in a cavity. My guess is that there is an active nest nearby.
As in past years, a great site to visit is http://www.owlcam.com These birds went on eggs very recently. (Mass. is about three weeks behind us for Barred owl egg dates, which is interesting because the young screech-owls just fledged in Central Park, while mine just went on eggs a week ago.)
