The Yakima Bluebird trail needs volunteer box monitors this Spring and Summer.

Monitors check the boxes along the Umptanum Road ( Ellensburg to the Wenas Creek Campground road intersection with Audubon road) and count eggs, hatchlings or note empty boxes. Vacated boxes get their nest removed. I take the opportunity to collect the nests for Dr Terry Whitworth to do his Protocalliphora studies. Boxes are checked each weekend on a day of the persons choice. Nesting species usually encountered Western and Mountain Bluebird, House Wren, Violet Green Swallow and occasionally a Mountain Chickadee and WB Nuthatch.

The route has 130 boxes (aprox) and most weekends need someone or a team to check the full length. Some weekends only need help on the upper half ( Ellensburg end)

I can usually count on a total of 8 - 10 hours from door to door to do the whole trail. There is plenty of opportunity to watch for birds around the area of the road and I enjoy getting there right at the crack of dawn to watch the quiet uplands wake up.

Dates needing help:

6/15 - 16 upper only
6/22 - 23
7/6 - 7
7/13 - 14 upper only
7/20 - 21
7/27 - 28
8/3 - 4
