this morning, i met a group of undergraduate students and dragged them
around the montlake fill this morning for a tour of the birds there.
the best sighting of the day was the male cinnamon teal and the peregrine
falcon (sitting in the beaver trees). also of interest, and following
trends mentioned by others on the list, were the change-over in the
relative numbers of "audubon's" and "myrtle" butterbutts. i saw one
female "audubon's" yellow-rumped warbler and zillions of singing and
fighting "myrtle" yellow-rumped warblers. this change in relative
numbers was dramatic and it occurred in less than one week.

it was a nice day for birding, although a tad bit cold. we saw 49 total
species and subspecies, as follows;

pied-billed grebe
double-crested cormorant
great blue heron
canada goose
"cackling" canada goose (Branta canadensis minima) 20, flying over
mallard
gadwall
green-winged teal
american wigeon
northern shoveler
CINNAMON TEAL, 1 male on west side of central pond
ring-necked duck
lesser scaup
bufflehead
common merganser
red-breasted merganser
hooded merganser
ruddy duck
red-tailed hawk, 2 (possibly a pair shopping around for nesting sites?)
peregrine falcon, appeared to be immature due to chocolate brown coloring
ring-necked pheasant
american coot
killdeer, 1 flying over and calling -- they were strangely silent today
mew gull, 14 flying over together in a group
western gull, 1 beautifully marked individual
glaucous-winged gull
"olympic" (glaucous-winged x western) gull
rock dove
anna's hummingbird, 1 male
american crow
tree swallow
violet-green swallow
barn swallow
black-capped chickadee
bushtit
marsh wren
ruby-crowned kinglet (heard only)
american robin
european starling
yellow-rumped "audubon's" warbler, 1 female
