Hi Tweets:
While out doing errands in S Seattle, I dropped by the overlook on the
Duwamish River at Diagonal Ave. I was hoping for some shorebird action
(maybe migrating north from where they're being seen in Oregon). No
shorebirds yet, except for two vocal Killdeer, but there were some other
interesting birds. This site is an enhanced birding site which is just
north of the Federal Center on E Marginal Way. The site is
called Federal Center South. There is a picnic table, a small grass area,
and several benches. There is a good view across the river to Kellogg
Island, and north to the Spokane St bridge. Looks like a good place to eat
your lunch.
Over on Kellogg Island were two Caspian Terns. As you look north toward
Spokane St and on the west side of the river, there is a huge orange and
white pole. There was an Osprey sitting about 1/2 way up the pole. Just
down to the left of that is a smaller light pole w/ a nest on top. There
was another Osprey sitting on the nest. One of the birds was calling.
There were a number of other bird species in the nearby bushes and on the
river. It's a nice area.
To reach it from Seattle, take hwy 99 south from the viaduct. There is an
overpass as Hwy 99 goes over Spokane St. Hwy 99 becomes E Marginal Way.
Turn right (west) from E Marginal at the second stoplight south of the
overpass. That is Diagonal Ave. Follow it past the huge stacks of
container vans to the Duwamish River. You will be south of Spokane St on
the east side of the river.
Yours, Carol Schulz
