My wife & I birded the Quilomene Wildlife Area near
Vantage, along the Old Vantage Highway on Sunday
morning. We headed up the dirt road about milepost
18.2. We found many Sage Thrashers, Sage Sparrows and
Brewer's Sparrows about, along with Say's Phoebes.
Somehow we missed on Vesper Sparrows. We saw our
first Mt. Bluebirds of the year here (we later saw
Western Bluebirds and many Mt.s along Umptanum Rd.,
south of Ellensburg). A pair of House Finches,
temporarily masquerading as Cassin's Finches, led us
to a Black-Tailed Jack Rabbit that scampered off at
high speed.
The desert wildflowers were out in force. The tiniest
ones blooming full and the lupine just beginning to
show its stuff.
