Portland State University research team (Leader: Dr. Michael T. Murphy)
seeks an individual with the ability to identify Northwest birds by sight or
sound. We are conducting research in natural parks and greenspaces within
Portland's Urban Growth Boundary to (a) assess vertebrate diversity and to
(b) identify the important determinants of variation in vertebrate diversity
across the urban landscape. Familiarity with all vertebrates would be
useful, but knowledge of birds is absolutely essential. We seek a person
with the ability to travel by foot over uneven terrain through potentially
dense vegetation, and one who is able to work well both independently and as
part of a team. Must be willing to work long hours in all weather
conditions. Access to a personal vehicle for transportation is essential.
Must be available from 1 June to 31 July, 2002. The stipend is $1,125/month
for a 2 month period. This will provide an exceptional research
opportunity, and for the ambitious student, an opportunity to learn GPS/GIS,
statistical analysis, and the chance to develop research skills. Please
