I had 10 gorgeous BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS on my beach last evening (on the
road 8 1/2 miles south of Ketchikan, Alaska). I've lived here 20+ years,
and this was a first. They're listed as common, spring and fall, in
Southeast Alaska by Robert Armstrong in his Guide to the Birds of Alaska,
but are considered rare (spring and fall) in our particular area, according
to Steve Heinl's Checklist, Birds of the Ketchikan Area. Anyway, I was
thrilled!
