Cascadia Hummingbird Report - 4/29/2002

There were several reports from Idaho and a report from Swan
Valley, MT this week. A report from Yakutat, AK represents
the northern most detection to date. Most observers in Alaska
report that birds have arrived later than usual and blame the
unusually cold spring this year. Reports from central and
eastern Washington are also increasing as more individuals take
advantage warming weather.

All other western hummingbird species have now been reported.
A pulse of CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS was evident last week with
reports from Idaho to the Willamette Valley of Oregon and north
to British Columbia. BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS have been
reported in Utah and BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINBIRDS are at least to
Nevada and Utah. If you are reporting Rufous Hummingbirds from
a region where these other species are likely, please make sure
that you study the field marks carefully. Even the most seasoned
of hummingbird watchers have been known to confuse species,
especially the very similar looking females. An excellent online
guide can be found at http://www.hummingbirds.net
