Last week end Mary Klein and I ventured east of the Cascades to look for
birds. A few highlights:
CLARK'S GREBE
1 seen from O'Sullivan Dam on 8/3
4 on Moses Lake seen from J Street on 8/4
One pair was building a floating nest and another pair had finished the nest
and was sitting on at least 3 eggs. These were great looks at Clark's
Grebes just east of the J St bridge in Moses Lake.
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN
Several seen on the Columbia River south of Vantage. 25 birds seen in
flight over Potholes Reservoir on 8/4.
GREAT EGRET
Many birds seen in the NW area of Potholes Reservoir. Accessed from "D"
Street off of Frontage Road a couple miles west of the town of Moses Lake.
At least 20 birds seen at the same time.
CHUKAR
A total of 35 for the week end seen on Huntzinger Road south of Vantage on
8/3 and from Crab Creek Rd on 8/4.
SOLITARY SANDPIPER
3 at NW Potholes Reservoir on 8/4
3 at Potato Ponds near Othello on 8/4
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER
1 at Potato Ponds on 8/4
WILSON'S PHALAROPE
seen at various places
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE
Seen at Potato Ponds on 8/4
BLACK TERN
2 at Para Ponds near Othello on 8/3
BURROWING OWL
2 on Dodson Road north of intersection w/ Frenchman Hills Rd on 8/3
BEWICK'S WREN
1 at NW Potholes Reservoir on 8/4
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
4 on Lower Crab Creek Rd on 8/4
