I made my first visit to Juanita Park a couple of days ago. What a
wonderful place! I had a marvelous time there and I look forward to
going back when the water birds have returned.

I have two questions about my visit.

1. I watched swallows feeding babies in two boxes. It seemed to me
that they were Tree Swallows. However, I remember reading in someone's
post recently that the Tree Swallows have left already. Is this true
everywhere? Would Tree Swallows still have babies in boxes at this
time? I know they were not Barn Swallows. They were either Violet
Greens of Tree and I am pretty sure they were Trees.

2. Walking along the causeway I saw an interesting bird with two
fledglings. They were in the grassy wetland area. The adult was
standing perfectly still watching out for trouble I imagine. It was the
size of a very small goose. It was a buffy color with a black bill.
The bill was more like a duck bill than a goose bill. It had a dark
streak through its eye. I could only see the top half of its body as it
was in the grass that the lower half as hidden. The two fledglings
showed up through the grass from time to time. They were a mottled
brown. They were quite big . much larger that the Mallard fledglings I
saw in another part of the park. My guess is that some of you who visit
Juanita Park often will know about this bird. What is it?
