I took a trip up to Hurricane Ridge on Thursday to see what was
blooming...and for the birds. The best birding was at the Interpretive
Center and along SR104 between the Hood Canal Bridge and HWY 101.

Interpretive Center notables:
4 BLUE GROUSE (2 hens, 2 juves)
1 Rufous Hummingbird
2 AM PIPIT

Hurricane Hills trail:
7 BLUE GROUSE (1 hen, 6 juves-1 taking dust bath at my feet)

Good flower diversity today, I won't take the time to list them now but I'd
send the list privately if interested. Also high numbers of butterlfies
which keep reminding me to buy the new Pyle book! Lots of some sort of
Fritillary.

Most interesting part of the day (besides all those grouse) was the high
numbers of Common Nighthawks along SR104. I had 30 in the stretch between
mp 10 to mp 2. I'm sure there were many more, but the person in the front
seat wouldn't let me slam on the brakes to count them! I wasn't aware that
Jefferson CO. had such numbers of this species. It was about 6:00 PM when I
saw the most, also had a couple just outside of Sequim in Clallum CO. I
love watching these birds and it seems like a great spot for them!
