Subject: Fw: Yellow-billed Cuckoo account - RFI

Hi Folks - Matt Hunter was looking for some information on the Yellow-billed Cuckoo that was identified in prey remains at a (Seattle?) Peregrine nest. I do not recall the specifics of that report (or even when it happened.....), but I'm sure that I read about it on Tweeters.

Can anyone return a message to Matt and Kelly (or post it to Tweeters, so that we can all be reminded of a neat piece of natural history..) with the necessary information?

Many thanks in advance!!

Jon,
Do you know the source of the information that Kelly Bettinger is recalling below (cuckoos as Peregrine prey)?
Thanks,
Matt Hunter

HI Matt, I just can't pull it out of the cobwebs of my memory....but it was up in Washington and perhaps on Tweeters. You might want to send a message to Tweeters (or to Jon Anderson who can then post to Tweeeters for you) and ask about the source of that info.

Hi Dave, Cuckoo account looks great...the only other potentially interesting piece of info I have heard of is the unusual number of times (for it's rarity in the region) YBCU has shown up as a prey species in the nests of peregrine falcons - one in particular was captured on video up in Washington. I can't recall now where I heard or read this - did you come across anything? It may have been Idaho PEFA nests in addition to the WA one?

Matt: Attached is the draft YBCU account for BOGR. Kelly Bettinger and Barbara Combs both sent me information for this account so I am copying it to them should they have any comments. I am also copying to Sybil Ackerman of Audubon of Portland as a matter of information. This account is longer than I had hoped (about 1750 words); but considering its former status, the lawsuits over failure of FWS to list, and present precarious condition throughout the west, it is a species of special interest among people interested in conservation of birds. I am still trying to find out what happened to the Bend specimen, but am not going to hold things up over that one.
