This is the VNHS Vancouver Bird Alert for Saturday
August 17th, evening update sponsored in part by the
Wild Birds Unlimited Stores in Vancouver and North
Vancouver.

The featured birds are FRANKLINS GULLS, AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVERS and a MARBLED GODWIT.

Western Sandpiper [numerous locations]

Caspian Tern [Tsawwassen Jetty]
Common Tern [Tsawwassen Jetty]
Black Turnstones [Coal Port Jetty]
Osprey [Tsawwassen]
White-tailed Ptarmigan [out of town]

Sightings for Saturday August 17th.

There were 2 FRANKLIN'S GULLS reported today: one
adult flying over the Iona sewage ponds and one
immature along the end of the Tsawassen ferry jetty
on the south side sitting with BONAPARTES GULLS.

Two AMERCIAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen at the foot
of 96th street in Delta with one SOLITARY SANDPIPER.
Also, there was one MARBLED GODWIT at the foot of
72nd street in Delta. There were 2 STILT SANDPIPERS
seen near the mansion at the foot of 112th street.
There were also reports of large groups of BAIRDS
SANDPIPERS and SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS.

At the Tsawassen ferry terminal today was one
COMMON TERN sitting with the FRANKLIN'S GULL and
over 100 BONAPARTES GULLS and 3 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS
at the end of the ferry terminal near the pay parking
on the south side. The WILLET in breeding plumage
was still along the south side base of the Tsawwassen
jetty. A SURFBIRD was reported on the jetty and an
OSPREY was on pilings between the Tsawwassen jetty and
the coal port jetty.

At Beach Grove lagoon in Tsawwassen were 3 STILT
SANDPIPERS among many shorebirds including LESSER
YELLOWLEGS and dozens of CASPIAN TERNS were sitting
on the beach.

Along the coal port jetty were 10 BLACK TURNSTONES.

Friday August 16th.

There were 4 STILT SANDPIPERS reported:
1 at Iona Sewage ponds, 2 at Beach Grove at the
foot of 12th in Tsawassen and 1 at the foot of
112th street in Delta at the Mansion.

At Iona Sewage ponds were many BAIRD'S, LEAST,
SEMIPALMATED, WESTERN AND LEAST SANDPIPERS and
a PEREGRINE FALCON hunting. There was also one
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE in the ponds.

At the Tsawassen compensation lagoon was the immature
FRANKLINS GULL. There was also a probable juvenile
HEERMANS GULL.

Out of town at Mount Cheam East of Chilliwack was
one hen WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN and 5 juveniles.
