I saw a hummingbird, but no ID or sound, out over the water between Jones
Island and Spieden Island on Monday afternoon- that is a mile or so
northeast of San Juan Island for those of you unfamiliar with the
islands. I have seen them out over the water at least a couple of miles
from any shoreline several times this summer. They seem to be checking
the boat for possible feeding as they fly up, hover and then zoom away.

Also, I saw a pair of Bobwhites here in Sudden Valley, east of
Bellingham, earlier this summer and a friend of mine saw one sitting on a
rail fence and calling last week across the street from Geneva School
just east of Bellingham last week. There have been several other
sightings in Whatcom county this summer according to reports on
Whatcombirds.
