1. Have adequate indexes. Most guides do, but some don't.

2. Consider use of colored tabs and guide/list on back of book to locate
groups and/or individual birds. See Fisher, Birds of the Rocky Mountains,
which also has a reference guide picturing all the birds in the front. See
also the tabs and lists in the front and back of Kaufman. Most birders do
not automatically know where a particular bird is in their guides.

3. Make cover and size appropriate for lugging around in the field. Sibley
