Subject: Re: [BIRDWG01] Willow Warbler in Alaska

Paul Lehman just telephoned here in a state of great agitation. The Willow
Warbler present since last Sunday is still there, and with it flit a
Yellow-browed Warbler, a Dusky Warbler, a Common Reed-Bunting, and a Siberian
Accentor, all within 200 m of each other in adjoining boneyards (winds have
been moderately SW for some time now). Also present were a juv. Kamchatka
Mew Gull, two japonicus American Pipits, and 7 Red-throated Pipits. Paul had
returned to Nome with his WINGS tour group several days ago, and during his
brief absence George Armistead found the reed-bunting, with the other birds
following in rather rapid fashion.

Paul asks that anyone with information on leg color and plumage characters of
Willow Warbler in the easternmost parts of its range please pass on the
information in this forum and to georgearmistead at hotmail.com (and/or
georgearmistead at aol.com); Paul should be online there in a few days, and then
for the duration of the month there. The legs of the Willow Warbler were a
bit darker brown than is illustrated in any available reference, and Paul
wonders whether this could be related to differences in eastern birds (or to
age, or both). Russian ornithologists might know something about this.

<< HI ALL:
Just got in an e-mail that Paul Lehman et al. found a Willow Warbler
(Phylloscopus trochilus)at Gambell, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska (25-26
Aug. 2002). Originally identified as a Chiffchaff (P. collybita) but after
reviewing video-tape and consulting with other birders and reference
materials the bird was identified. This is a first for North America
(although a specimen from Pt. Barrow Alaska was thought to be this species
that was collected on 11 June 1968, was re-examined and turned out to be
an Arctic Warbler (P. borealis).
sincerely
