Jim Pruske and I birded the Cowlitz Trout Hatchery in Lewis County. The
area has a wonderful riparian section, small open fields, a marsh that
will become more of a lake in the winter when the lily pads die down,
and water retention ponds in the back of the hatchery. The ponds in the
back of the hatchery are for authorized personal only, but with
permission, you can enter no problem. The staff is very friendly. Only 2
ponds are full at this time, but in the far back, they have shallow
ponds that are good for shorebirds right now. We had 4 different
shorebirds in one of the shallow ponds at one time. (2 Killdeer, 1
Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, and 1 Baird's Sandpiper).
During the rainy season the ponds will fill up and should be good for
waterfowl.
Here are a few species seen for the day.

Spotted Sandpiper - 10
Baird's Sandpiper - 1
Solitary Sandpiper - 1
American Kestrel - 2 (along Hwy. 508)
Merlin - 1 (chasing a large flock of Cedar Waxwings and Evening
Grosbeaks)
Red Tailed Hawk - 2
Osprey - 3
Turkey Vulture - 6
Pileated Woodpecker - 2
Hairy Woodpecker - 1
Red Breasted Sapsucker - 1
Wilson Warbler
Black Throated Gray Warbler - 2
Warbling Vireo - 1
Hutton's Vireo - 1
Western Tanager - 1
Wood Duck - 2
