Tweets - my wife, Janka, was one of five being honored as an "Earth Hero"
this morning by King County Executive Ron Simms. This was for their work
doing plant salvage work for the county. The ceremony was at a salvage site
at Redmond Ridge on Novelty Hill Rd. Working with developers (this morning
was Quadrant), they dig up and pot native plants from sites soon to be
bulldozed. The plants are then available for use in revegetation projects.
This is the 10th anniversary of the project.

I hurt my wrists in a bicycle accident two weeks ago, so I was out of
commission for digging up plants, which freed me to do some birding.

Literally the first bird I saw when I got out of the car was a PILEATED
WOODPECKER, the next was a COMMON RAVEN, and next was a flock of PINE
SISKIN.

In fact, there were quite a few siskin, including a flock of about 100 just
southeast of Novelty Hill Rd as I followed the high-tension power line
corridor. If someone is looking for siskins this season, this might be a
good place to look.

Other notable birds were a female HAIRY WOODPECKER, a lovely TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER, and lots and lots and LOTS of DARK-EYED JUNCOS.
