Dear Tweeters,

If you come back from your CBC feeling disappointed because you missed
such-and-such rare bird, or your species count was low, or the pot-luck
chili lacked for spice, don't feel bad.

Consider the birders who do the North Cascades CBC. This year, for example,
my party (the two of us) came up with a whopping 14 species and 117
individuals. We missed Oregon Junco. We found zero raptors, zero
gallinaceous birds, zero woodpeckers, and zero finches. The bird of the day
was a toss-up between our one Varied Thrush and our one Red-breasted
Nuthatch. It never stopped raining, with temperatures ranging from 39 to 41
degrees Fahrenheit, and a relative humidity of two million percent. There
were, I believe, only nine participants, divided among four parties; I think
the best area had about 24 species.

Needless to say, a pleasant and cheerful time was had by all.

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
