Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday December 19. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 503-233-3976.
A BLACK-BACKED or WHITE WAGTAIL was seen December 13 at the EE Wilson SWA.
It could not be relocated. The EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to be
seen at the Fernhill Wetlands.
Good numbers of BROWN PELICANS are still along the coast, but they are
quickly moving southward. One was blown inland and was seen near Peoria,
southeast of Corvallis December 16. The last storms brought large numbers of
RED PHALAROPES to the coast and many into the Willamette Valley. Large
flocks of HERRING GULLS are now along the coast and in the Willamette
Valley.
The December 15 Coos Bay Christmas Count found three HEEERMANN'S GULLS,
FULMARS, SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS, POMARINE and PARASITIC JAEGERS. Two
TRUMPETER SWANS are now at Eckman Lake near Waldport. Four ROCK SANDPIPERS
were at Depoe Bay December 18. On December 14 a GYRFALCON, two MARBLED
GODWITS, and a hybrid GOLDEN-CROWNED/WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW were on the
Tillamook Count. A TROPICAL KINGBIRD and a NASHVILLE WARBLER were on the
December 15 Columbia Estuary Count.
Over 200 SANDHILL CRANES are still in the Sauvie Island/Ridgefield NWR area.
On December 17 three TRUMPETER SWANS were on Sauvie Island. Five BARN
SWALLOWS were over Bybee Lake in North Portland December 13. A flock of
HORNED LARKS was in North Portland December 13 at the end of Ramsey Blvd in
the Rivergate area. A female AMERICAN REDSTART was there December 18. A
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was at Bybee Lake December 18.
The Baskett Slough GYRFALCON was seen again December 17. One was near Shedd,
southeast of Corvallis the same day. On December 18 a BRANT was at Lake
Labish near Salem and a ROSS'S GOOSE was near Monroe. Up to nine TURKEY
VULTURES are apparently wintering about the Fern Ridge Reservoir. On
December 18 six BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were at the West Eugene Wetlands.
On December 17, 52 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were in the Straits Unit of Lower
Klamath NWR. On December 15, 686 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were found on the
Sisters Christmas Count. Large flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS arrived in the
Wallowa Valley during the week.
Thats it for this week.
