This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Wednesday, December 18th, evening
update, sponsored in part by the Wild Birds Unlimited Stores in
Vancouver and North Vancouver.

The feature bird is: GREATER YELLOWLEGS

Sightings for Wednesday, December 18th

At Beach Grove Lagoon were 42 GREATER YELLOWLEGS.

Tuesday, December 17th

In a field at 64th Street and 28th Ave near Boundary Bay a large flock of
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER contained 1 MARBLED GODWIT and bird believed to be a
GOLDEN PLOVER. This is the same field that in late November had Vancouver's
latest American Golden Plover ever. Birders are encouraged to look the area
over carefully at hightide. There is no confirmed winter record of American
Golden Plover for Vancouver.

An AMERICAN KESTREL has been seen for many weeks at Glover Road and the
Langley By-Pass in Langley.

Of interest was the 1st D'Arcy Christmas Bird Count with a total of 45
species. The highlight being a PACIFIC LOON.

Monday, December 16th

At the base of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty on the south side was
an immature RUDDY TURNSTONE found amongst a dozen BLACK TURNSTONES.

Sunday, December 15th

At the base of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty was a RED PHALAROPE was observed
sitting close to shore.

The Vancouver Natural History Society held its annual Christmas Bird Count
today despite the horrible weather. The tally was small at 119 species but
here were a couple of highlights.

At Iona Island an adult HARRIS'S SPARROW was seen throughout the day.
Off the tip of the South Jetty (which is closed to the public for the next
couple of months due to major repairs) 5 ANCIENT MURRELETS and a couple of
MARBLED MURRELETS were reported.

At Prospect Point in Stanley Park was a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER.

There was some good news today with a sighting of 2 CRESTED MYNAS hanging on
at 1st and Wylie in Vancouver.

At the concession stand at Lynn Canyon Park a BARRED OWL was seen.
