Hello Tweets,
Today my mother and I attempted to relocate the Bean Goose at Bowerman Basin and surrounding areas where the bird has been recently found, but with NO luck. Up to 8 other birders during our visit between 11:30am-3:45pm were present searching for the Bean Goose as we checked the open fields accessed from the south end of K Street in Hoquiam and the general Bowerman Basin vicinity. Relatively low numbers of Canada Geese were observed with small numbers of "Dusky"Canada Geese noted at both locations that were checked. The Bean Goose may still be present in the immediate area and roosting with other Canada Geese at a more disclosed location, but it may take time in locating and further searching the longer the bird remains. The 3 lingering SNOW GEESE were again noted across from Lana's Cafe at the Bowerman Airport, but then flew off to the west towards the west end of the Bowerman Airport. Fairly constant southerly winds were apparent during most of our stay at Bowerman Basin, which probably pushed in good numbers of lingering RED PHALAROPES at the Hoquiam STP with up to 88 birds counted on the entire pond that actively foraged loosely alone or with small numbers of other waterbirds. The only other notable waterbird species present at the Hoquiam STP were a single Ruddy Duck and a single Bonaparte's Gull.
On route to Bowerman Basin this morning my mother and I stopped by the Nisqually NWR in northern Thurston Co. at 10am and located a single male REDHEAD and single resting RED PHALAROPE in the flooded area immediately west of the main parking lot/visitor center and south of the McAllister Creek trail.
Good birding,
Ruth and Patrick Sullivan
