Subject: Flycatching Townsend's Warblers

Tyler Davis asked about insect hatches in winter being unusual. No, there
are at least three insects in my area (near Monroe, WA) which commonly have
hatches from Nov-Feb. Crane flies (Tipulidae) Midges (Chironomidae) and
Mayflies (Ephemerellidae) all have mid winter hatches during warm spells.
The midges were very thick along the wetland by my house yesterday. They are
tiny and very bright green little flying bugs. When they are swarmed like
that it must be a great food source. Alas, no Townsends in my neighborhood
yet this year.
