After reading Jason Paulios' message on the Ruff from earlier today, I
raced over to Satsop late in the afternoon and was successful in finding
the bird at the same location where it was seen this morning. It was
still associating with a Greater Yellowlegs and I was able to watch it for
45 minutes before dark. It was only about 30 yards from the roadside,
which made the viewing quite good. For those who don't know Moore Road,
it's easy to reach from US 12 (west of Elma) by taking a right turn north
onto Fourth St and going a short distance into the village of Satsop.
Turn right on to Monte Elma Road and head east. Moore Road is on the left
(north) just outside of town. Follow Moore Rd north by crossing over the
railroad tracks. The partially flooded pasture with the Ruff is on the
left (west) side of the road and is a few hundred yards beyond the
intersection with Moore Road West. The bird foraged and preened along the
water's edge directly across from the mailboxes for the 86 and 90
addresses. This is a great end-of-the-year bird for me and might make a
great first-of-the-year bird as well!
