This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for January 29,

The flock of COMMON REDPOLLS previously reported at Battelle in North
Richland were again present on January 4th when 35 were seen by Bill &
Nancy LaFramboise.

On January 5, Dennis Johnson saw a BARN and GREAT HORNED OWL as well as a
MERLIN in WE Johnson Park in Richland.

Four TUNDRA SWAN were at the south end of Nelson Island in Groves Park in
Richland on January 6, observed by Mary Lilga.

Also on January 6, Andy and Ellen Stepniewski found a first-year THAYER'S
GULL and a GLAUCOUS GULL along with the four more common gulls at the
marina just east of Bateman Island. In Groves Park they had BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS with some Cedar Waxwings. This is the only report of Bohemians in
the Tri-Cities so far this winter. They also saw a LAPLAND LONGSPUR along
Crooks Road on the south slope of Rattlesnake Mountain, north of Prosser.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL has been sporadically seen at the Walla Walla
Delta again this winter. On January 11, it was at the marina just east of
Bateman Island.

At Columbia Park on January 17, Bob Woodley, Ruth Fischer and Nancy
LaFramboise found 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE among many Canada Geese.
There was also a MEW GULL among the Ring-bills at Two Rivers County Park in
Kennewick.

On January 19, Bob Woodley and Warren Hall found 2 male EURASIAN WIGEONS at
Groves Park in Richland. With the possibility of 2 more in Columbia Park
in Kennewick, there may be 4 Eurasian Wigeons locally. Also at Groves
Park, Bob & Warren had a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.

Shirley Sonnichsen had a pair of hooting GREAT HORNED OWLS in her Richland
yard on January 22.

On January 23, Bob Woodley observed 3 COMMON LOONS at the south end of
Nelson Island.

It pays to study similar species. On January 26, Chris Simonen observed a
male PURPLE FINCH at her feeders in Richland among the much more common
House Finches.
