While traveling back from feeding the gulls at the Walla Walla Delta (only
gull of note was an adult Mew Gull), saw a Snow/Ross's in the field about 1
mile south of Burbank with numerous Canada. Saw through binoculars that it
was really small (actually short with a short neck), compared to the nearby
Canadians. Scoped the bird and saw it had the characteristic very stubby
bill with no gape and bluish knobly area around the base of the bill.
Rounded, more graceful head also. Other helpful markings included the fact
that it was a juvenile that was all white on the head, neck, and back except
for a small brushy gray area at the back of the neck and a darker eyeliner..
I get to compare Ross's and Snow just about every year in my travels. Was
at Slaton Sea just a few weeks ago. Nice bird.
