Today I went to Cle Elum to look for the PINE GROSBEAKS and BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS reported by Alan Grenon and Mike Donohue on January 26th. I saw
at least 9 grosbeaks and a flock of about 40 waxwings at the same location,
4th and Harris. Both species came in to feed on mountain ash berries or
perched in nearby conifers, but were fairly flighty and didn't stay around
long. (I also saw 5 more PINE GROSBEAKS and 3 EVENING GROSBEAKS in South
Cle Elum.) While in Cle Elum, I had a long talk with one of the
homeowners, who wondered why on earth so many people had been wandering
around her neighborhood. She was very pleased to hear about the birds and
had a look at a grosbeak through my scope. She said to look for elk on the
ridge behind the houses; they often come down quite close in the late
afternoon.
