After missing on a life view of Bohemian Waxwing on a recent trip to
Winthrop/Twisp, I believe I finally saw one while strolling in the Queen
Anne area of Seattle yesterday afternoon. I first saw a flock of Cedar
Waxings in an ornamental tree. In a tree overhead was a waxwing that I could
see poorly, especially since I did not have my binoculars. The bird was
silhouetted against the sky so I could not make out color well. I could
however clearly see the black mask and a vertical white stripe on the wing,
closer to the clear crisp line in the Nat. Geo. field guide than the wider
line in the Sibley guide. Due to the position of the bird (in profile) and
the poor light, I do not think that I was seeing the faint white tertial
line of a Cedar. Certainly not a great "life view", but I do believe it was
a Bohemian Waxwing. I would appreciate feedback from other Tweeters on this
sighting, especially as it was my first view of the species in a somewhat
unusual location.
