Len Steiner and I made a trip on Sat. to Wenatchee, up the east side of the
Columbia R. to Chelan Lake and on up the Methow River Valley to Winthrop.
Sunday we went from Twisp to Pateros, Brewster, Bridgeport, then hwy 17 to
172 and to Mansfield and Waterville on the way back. The weather was good,
but we were disappointed in the numbers of birds, except for waterfowl. The
warmer winter and less snow may be the reason. Noticeably missing were
waxwings, Rosy Finches, Snow Buntings. We had 43 species on Saturday
including Canvasback, Redhead, 12 Bald Eagles, a Merlin (a 1st for this trip)
and American Dipper. We only had 39 birds on Sunday but there were 10 new
species for a total of 53 for the trip including a Golden Eagle, 7
Rough-legged Hawks, a Great Horned Owl at its usual location west of
Mansfield, a Northern Shrike, a Townsend?s Solitaire, hundreds of Horned
Larks and one Western Meadowlark. Mammals included groundhogs, coyotes and
many deer.
