Gene, Rebecca, Jack & anyone else on Tweeters who isn't already recognizant
of the "deal" with NORTHERN FLICKERS [yellow-shafted, red-shafted, & all the
potential intergrades/hybrids],

There was a terrific article in Vol. XXIX: #5 (October, 1997) of "Birding,"
the American Birding Association publication in the "gleanings from the
technical literature" section which was entitled "FLICKER FUTURES" by Paul
A. Debenedictis. I highly reccommend it to any and all who are interested
in exploring further this truly fascinating subject.

The worst government is the most moral. One composed of cynics is
often very tolerant and human.
But when fanatics are on top there is no limit to oppression.

>>My husband and I were excited to see a Yellow-shafted
>>flicker at one of our suet feeders this morning. But
>>this guy was unusual, being a male with gorgeous
>>yellow under the wings and tail, the red nape
>>crescent, but a RED malar as opposed to the black
>>mustache listed as the usual. Sibley speaks of the
>>birds as ?intergrading broadly? between the

>>Whatever it means, we were very happy to see him and
>>enjoy the sun shining on his lovely yellow underparts!
