I have seen the book in the stores and it is nicely put together. I have
appreciated all of Matthiessen's writings, especially his book on shorebirds
so I expect this book to be worthwhile. There is a favorable review in the
February 14, 2002 issue of The New York Review of Books.(Not often that a
book on birds gets in there.) The reviewer recognizes the opportunity of
cranes being a metaphor for the ability of different nations to work together
to solve environmental challenges. Or even broader, our ability to exist at
all together.
