I hope this isn't too far off topic but I wonder if Ruth Sullivan and some
of the other birder/photographer folks on the list could share briefly their
recommendations for a basic camera outfit (of the film variety) for bird
documentation. Particularly a lens that can take hand-held, recognizable (eg
for documentation/study purpose) photos of birds at a reasonable range (say
100' or less), one which could be tripod mounted for longer range shots, and
a macro type lens for butterfly/dragonfly photos. I suspect many birders
like me would like to be able to get documentary photos without getting too
heavily in debt or collecting too much equipment!

I am intrigued and interested in digi-scoping as well but suspect there is
still a place for traditional camera gear. But would be interested in any
thoughts on this as well.
