Hi Everybody:
Thought I'd report some interesting bird sightings in South King County. On
Sun, Feb 17 during our GRNRA (Kent Ponds) monthly census, we found a
roosting BARN OWL in the top of a pine tree in Anderson Park. It was very
hard to see up in the dense branches. Anderson Park is on the west side of
Kent Ponds. It's on Russell Road, along the Green River, just south of S
212th St. On Mon, Presidents' Day, a birding friend saw the ALBINO
YELLOW-BILLED LOON at Redondo at 11AM. He said it was 100 yards north of
Salty's, about 50 yards out, actively diving and feeding. Of course this
bird is hard to chase, as it ranges from Dash Point down to Commencement Bay
in Tacoma.
On Wed, Feb 20 I was down in the town of Kent, just north of James St on N.
2nd and 3rd Aves. The cross street in the area is Cloudy St. Two WESTERN
SCRUB JAYS were perched on tall evergreens near 839 3rd Ave N. They
apparently roost in a holly bush at 801 2nd Ave N, across Cloudy from a
kid's play area. A BLACK MERLIN was perched on a tall evergreen near 840
2nd Ave N. This is an area of small, modest houses in the city.
